Bento Bae opened on the second floor of the Madang Mall in the summer of 2017, in the space formerly occupied by Curry House.

Served Japanese dishes, from sushi to ramen, even poke.

In Japan, a bento (弁当) is a single-portion take-out or home-packed meal often prepared for lunch.

Bento originated from the Chinese term “biàndāng” meaning “convenient.”

Bento boxes are typically partitioned containers with different compartments for rice, proteins, vegetables, and other side dishes.

There are many different styles and varieties of bento, such as ekiben (sold at train stations), kyaraben (decorated like characters), makunouchi bento (classic style with rice, umeboshi, fish, egg), and wappameshi (served in a round wooden container).

Bento can be homemade or purchased pre-made, and the contents often aim for a balanced, nutritious meal.

Trends in bento over time have included cute character designs (kyaraben), high-quality nori, single large portions, local regional dishes like Okinawan taco rice, and simple frugal styles.
