An affogato is a classic Italian coffee-based dessert made with a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream “drowned” in a shot of hot espresso.
The contrast of the hot, bitter coffee and cold, creamy ice cream creates an indulgent flavor experience.
Traditionally, an affogato contains just three ingredients: espresso, gelato, and an optional splash of liqueur like amaretto or frangelico.
The gelato or ice cream is usually vanilla flavored, which pairs harmoniously with the coffee.
Affogato can be served as a dessert or a beverage, often in a tall glass to allow the ice cream to melt into the espresso. A biscotto or cookie is sometimes served on the side.
